Readers will be aware from the last post we blogged that the Government increased fees for immigration appeals from 10th October 2016 from £140 per person for an oral appeal to £800 per Appellant in immigration appeals. An astronomical increase and unprecedented against the whole Tribunal system. Fortunately, in what may be seen as an acceptance that this is an unreasonable increase and possibly afraid of legal challenges, the Government has confirmed that fees will be instead charged at the old rates and those who have paid the higher fees will have their payments refunded. The announcement was made on 25th October 2016. The Government believes that persons who courts and tribunals should make a greater financial contribution to their costs and will review tribunal fees again in the future.
